Davana is a small aromatic herbaceous plant native to south India. The davana herb is a member of the silver-leafed. Artemisia family & on steam distilling it has a sweet, fruity, floral and woody smell. The leaves of Davana and blue and green with a grey white coating &the plant produces fragrant yellow flowers.
Davana is strongly rooted in Indian religious traditions and is called Davanam in Tamil. The garlands & bouquets of davana are used in rituals & to decorate the temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Davana is also used in Ayurveda. It is commercially cultivated in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, & Andhra Pradesh. It’s also found in Kashmir Valley, Shimla & Nanital Hills. Firstre corded in 18th century Davana’s exact origins are not known yet but it’s quite ancient. Davana oil is used in perfumery & aromatherapy.
